BOOK FIVE

Book five opens with Shelby confronting the consequences of a deeply painful decision she hopes will offer protection for those she loves. Now, she must also come to terms with isolation and troubling news of Martin.
An alarming phone call from best friend, Freddie introduces a new threat. Nazis posing as American detectives have appeared at Freddie’s hospital, pursuing Vivian Verrault and Dr. Martin Hesse.
To help Freddie, Shelby seeks evidence that Dr. Hesse has fallen victim to the barbaric treatment of priests at Dachau. Which leads her to her former history professor, Rene D’Aurville, now an anti-Nazi activist and newspaper publisher. Under his guidance, Shelby finds herself employed and living on her own for the first time.
At D’Aurville’s underground newspaper ‘Le Temps Nouveau’, she finds purpose and a reprieve from loneliness. The newspaper also chronicles Hitler’s murderous activities during his takeover of Germany.
Shelby’s safely invisible life takes an unwanted turn when she crosses paths with Peter Frolich, who claims to be Swiss. Inexplicably, Shelby’s drawn to his quiet, reserved chauffeur, Franz.
Against her employer’s wishes, she befriends the apparently harmless young Frolich, but soon discovers he’s not who he appears to be. She’s also surprised by the unexpected concern for her well being shown by her aloof employer.
Her world is soon threatened when the unique stones from the wedding ring Verrault gave her, are discovered by authorities. Once again, she becomes a fugitive seeking to escape before Verrault learns she is still alive.
